Development Baker

About The Role

David Wood Foods is a food manufacturing organisation with a bakery site in Dudley. We have over 20 years experience in the food business, and currently produce a range of quality products for the retail and foodservice industry from seven high-tech factories.

As a result of building great relationships with our customers, we have established ourselves as leaders in the own label sector within the food industry, providing food products to the biggest retailers in the UK.

Yet we’re not a company to sit back and relax. Product development is our heartbeat and we work closely with our customers to develop products that combine specific requirements and imaginative flair. Working with key partners we have already developed a number of new exciting and award-winning products that continue to attract and delight consumers.

Our Development, Technical and Sales teams work closely together to innovate and deliver high quality goods that meet our customer’s briefs and technical standards. At this time we are looking for a competent baker to join our product development team to help the business to continue to grow with innovative baked products. In this role you will participate in all aspects of the concept to launch process including:

  • Creative brainstorming of new products, including new flavours and techniques, in line with customer briefs and DWF inspirational pipeline innovation streams
  • Kitchen based concept development work
  • Leading daily product sampling sessions
  • Factory trials of new products and improvements to existing products
  • Driving forward product standards
  • Sourcing of new ingredients
  • Product presentations internally and to customers

Responsibilities & Requirements

  • Competent “hands on” baker, must be degree qualified or have a minimum of 3 years industry experience
  • Awareness of current food/ flavour trends and UK bakery market
  • Awareness of Good Manufacturing Practice and HACCP
  • Sound knowledge of properties of different dough/ batter types and ingredient functionality
  • Are able to work individually and as part of an extended team
  • Take a “common sense” approach
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organisational skills and record keeping
  • Competent user of Microsoft office including word and excel
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard office hours when required
  • Flexibility to travel to other sites when required
  • Are eligible to work in the UK
  • Hold a full UK driving licence
